You can hardly learn how to hypnotize someone, without talking about stories. Stories are an extremely effective way to directly communicate with the subconscious mind. Here again, there is nothing new, stories have been used from time immortal to communicate. You have used them as well, but not recognizing their value on how to hypnotize someone.

Let’s begin with a familiar example. If you have a child that is always yelling, saying help, or constantly overreacting, you might tell them the following story.

Once upon a time there was a little boy who lived in the forest. He thought it would be a great way to get attention to yell “Wolf” several times a day. Every time he did this, people would come running to his rescue, only to find him in no danger, with no wolf in sight. After being scolded, he would only continue to cry wolf again and again. After a while, people would stop coming, because they knew he wasn’t in any danger.

Then one day as he was walking in the woods a huge wolf came upon him and threatened to eat him. He started screaming wolf at the top of his lungs. No one came. He screamed louder. No one came. Finally after no one came to save him, the wolf ate him.

Here is what happens inside your brain when you tell this story. Your conscious mind simply listens and is entertained. Your subconscious mind, in order to make sense of the story, starts searching for a way to adapt it to fit your circumstances. It has to make sense of it. Your subconscious will not let go of the story until it draws parallels with your own life.

While only changing small things, such as names and places, will get the point across, it is far more effective if the subconscious draws deeper meaning. In the example above, the child will make a very good lasting parallel to the story and will change their behavior. If you told the following story, you would get an effect, but not as deep and lasting.

There was a boy named Mac (assume the child’s real name is Mike), he would always pretend that someone was hurting him. After a while, no one listened to him when he was getting hurt. Wouldn’t that be awful?

The first story is much better. There are many parallels for the subconscious to draw. Many are not completely transparent, but some are. These stories keep getting tossed around inside the subconscious until it feels it has exhausted all possibilities of meaning.

Stories have been used since before writing. They were used to tell history as well as to help teach important morals. Jesus used parables (which are stories) almost exclusively to teach his disciples. He understood how powerful they were to get his point across, and have it maintain a lasting effect.

Ok, stories are cool and all, but what do they have to do with learning how to hypnotize someone?

Keep in mind, hypnosis is simply communicating directly with the subconscious mind to bring about a desired thought or action. Watch someone being told a story. Even better, watch a child being told a story. Their eyes are wide, they are completely attentive, in a word, they are in a trance. There is something for the conscious mind to be occupied with, while the real meaning of your story gets directly into the subconscious.

It is even better than the subconscious simply hearing your story. It makes the connections itself. This is far more powerful than you telling it what to think. You can tell someone the red stove means hot. Once they figure it out for themselves, they will never forget. A story allows the subconscious to learn on it’s own.

Just telling a story will help you on your journey to learn how to hypnotize someone. Telling a story while someone is already in a deep trance is 20 times more powerful.

If you want to learn how to hypnotize people, you must take responsibility for what you communicate. The end goal of hypnosis is to communicate directly to the subconscious mind in such a way that it takes a precise desired action.

As the hypnotist, your job is to communicate with the unconscious mind.  In order to effectively communicate you need to understand what communication is and who is responsible.

Often what we say is misunderstood by the way we communicate. As a professional communicator your meaning in a communication is exactly what the other person understands it to be.

Restated, what the other person understands the communication to mean is what it means.  Perception is reality. Consider the following statements;

I didn’t say I kicked his dog.
I didn’t say I kicked his dog.
I didn’t say I kicked his dog.
I didn’t say I kicked his dog.
I didn’t say I kicked his dog.
I didn’t say I kicked his dog.

Notice the highlighted word in each of the sentences. If you put the emphasis on the highlighted word it gives that sentence an entirely different meaning. It draws an entirely different picture in your mind.

I didn’t say I kicked his dog. ~We understand to mean, someone else said I kicked his dog.
I didn’t say I kicked his dog. ~Just because I didn’t say it, doesn’t mean I didn’t write it.
I didn’t say I kicked his dog. ~We understand to mean someone else kicked his dog.
I didn’t say I kicked his dog. ~Threw rocks at it maybe…
I didn’t say I kicked his dog. ~We interpret to mean I kicked someone elses dog.
I didn’t say I kicked his dog. ~His cat on the other hand…

(Side note- No animals were harmed in the writing of this article. I love dogs and cats, however I purposefully wanted the emotional involvement.)

When I say “chair” a picture pops into your mind of a chair. If I say “white chair”, possibly a different picture pops into your mind. If I say “white plastic chair that sits on your front porch” you have a completely different picture. The point is this, if I want you to have a specific picture in your mind, it is up to me to give it to you.

Hypnosis is no different. If as a hypnotist I want you to have a specific picture in your mind it is up to me, the hypnotist, to paint that picture for you.

This is why the preceding lessons were so important. By using the powers of observation we are starting to develop, we can calibrate whether or not our subject is painting the picture we want them to paint.

You will be able to recognize the signs of trance. You will know when your subject is coming out of trance and when they are going deeper.  By observing and guiding them, we can get them into a deeper trance making the hypnosis session more productive.

Today we learned that we are ultimately responsible for any communication we make. It is our responsibility that what was understood, was what we meant. Think how much better the entire world be if everybody excepted this level of responsibility for what they say and do.

For today’s exercise I want you to talk to someone. I want you tell them a story, any story. I want you to picture the scene in your mind and describe it in vivid detail. Leave nothing out.

For example, don’t say “I watched TV.” Say “I sat in my chair with my feet propped up watching the most amazing program on the History Channel last night.  I learned such an unbelievable amount about the Civil War. I had no idea it could be that interesting. I was so enthralled with the show, I didn’t even notice the commercials that were on.

Remember, what your subject perceives is reality.

Learning how to hypnotize people is a journey, not a destination. We will make it to the city of hypnosis, only to realize it is but a border town to an entire different country.

If you want to learn how to hypnotize people, gaining rapport with your client is essential to being an effective hypnotist. Milton Erickson once said anything is possible in trance given enough rapport. Your success in hypnosis depends on developing your powers of observation.

We have done two exercises using rapport. This is a skill we must master completely. We started with basic matching and mirroring, then had a further discussion on rapport, how to gain it, break it use it and avoid it. Hypnosis is a communication skill, period. Most hypnotic training focuses on the words we use only. Since this is 5% of our communication, I think there are some other things to learn first. Such as the other 95%.

These are non verbal communications. That means they are not about the words. They are about our delivery of the words and our body language. In order to communicate with our clients, we must first do a couple of things.

One, they must trust us. This is rapport. This will be half your battle in learning how to hypnotize people.

Two, we must understand the way they think. We are all unique people with very distinct personalities. Yes you can group them in one of a few types, but these are guidelines only. No one fits into any stereotype 100%.

First a definition I have left out rapport=pacing=matching and mirroring. These terms are almost interchangeable. However there is a difference between matching and mirroring. Matching, is the subject moves their left arm, and you move your left arm. Mirroring is your subject moves their left arm and you move your right arm. If you constantly match, you will be caught. Mirroring is what the person would see looking in the mirror. Mirroring is a far stronger subconscious technique, and will rarely be perceived. A combination is best.

Rapport goes quite a bit deeper than just their physical movements, body language, and posture. I hinted before at the rate they breathe. This is critical. Think about it. The body has two major functions to support life. It breathes, and the heart beats. At this point, I don’t want you to concern yourself with their pulse, but know in time as your skill set advances, so will your ability to observe such things.

Today, I want you to focus on breathing. Just one simple thing. I want you to start to notice how someone breathes. Through their mouth or nose? From their diaphragm, or belly? Deep or shallow? How fast?

I mentioned before, you don’t have to stare at their chests. (This is a good way to get slapped by a lady in polite society.) Watch their face, neck, especially their shoulders. Notice how they rise and fall with every breath. Watch their abdomen to calibrate depth and location.

I want you to start to notice that people talk at the same rate they breathe. Today I want you to take a moment and calibrate your breathing to theirs. Match it as best you can. Don’t worry, the more you do this, the better you we become. When you are talking to someone, breath the exact same as them. Just match and pace.

When you talk, talk at the same speed as their normal breathing pattern. You will quickly notice how much this varies with emotion, even in the same conversation. If the talk about something exciting, their breathing increases. If they talk about something somber, it slows.

The bond and rapport you will get simply from their breathing is completely subconscious, and I will prove it to you. While laying in bed next to someone asleep, or in a restaurant, pick someone at another table. It works better if they are not looking directly at you, nor you at them. Use your peripheral vision to gauge their breathing. Match their breathing for a period of five minutes. This is a long time, but do it anyway. After 5 minutes being in complete sync with them, change your breathing. Breath deeper and slower, or shallower and faster. Not drastically, but noticeably. Watch them. Within one minute their breathing will match your new rate.

You must try this to believe it. Think this could be useful?

Hopefully you did the exercise on covert hypnosis. Today we will further discuss rapport and how it can be used to learn how to hypnotize people.

Having you jump right in and discover rapport was the best way I could think of to introduce you to the concept. Now I would like to discuss what actually took place.

Rapport is a tool used by many people, some quite on accident, and others use it quite purposefully. This is an extremely powerful weapon you must master to learn how to hypnotize people. Do you know someone that everybody likes? Someone who you would define as charming or intriguing? These people use rapport quite on accident, but are very good at it.

Salespeople use it on purpose. In order to sell you something, they need to make a connection with you. Consider these two examples, have you ever went into a store with the sole purpose of buying an item, and because of the sales person, you left without it? They failed to have rapport with you. They made no connection; you didn’t listen to what they said, because for some reason you didn’t believe them. Your subconscious threw out a warning to you that something was wrong.

Now remember a time when you went into a store with absolutely no intention of buying anything, and you walked out with either an expensive item, or having spent way more than you intended to. Here the exact opposite happened. The salesperson connected to you subconsciously. You liked what they said, how they said it, and believed you could trust what they said to you. This is someone who has learned how to build rapport with someone.

Extensive research has been done into the art and science of persuasion (selling). Over 70% of people who bought a high ticket item when surveyed said they bought the item solely because of the salesperson. Price was pretty far down the list. If you have had either of the above examples happen to you, you have been hypnotized. In the first example, your subconscious gave you the suggestion to leave without buying, in the second, you bought and then some.

Either way, make no mistake; these are both examples of hypnosis. You don’t need a couch, a swinging pocket watch, or a man wearing a cape with a handlebar mustache to be hypnotized. All you need is direct contact with the subconscious mind. These are called informal inductions.

We have billions of pieces of information coming to our brains every second. We cannot possibly process everything in an instant. Our subconscious has come up with patterns that we use to identify things. For the most part this works very well.

Imagine a burner on an electric stove is glowing red. Will you touch it? Not again! We instantly recognize red on a stovetop means hot, don’t touch. This works for us. This information could be false however. What if the burner was painted red, it would be perfectly safe to touch. This is the exception rather than the rule.

Here is another example. Imagine two televisions in a store. The first was marked for $899 but was marked down to $465. The other is marked at $459. Which would you consider to be the better buy? What if they are exactly the same TV with the only difference being the name on the front. We instantly recognize that expensive equals better. Usually this is correct, but sometimes it is not.

The same holds true for rapport. We have found that people we make a connection with are usually trustworthy, and their advice is good and sound. This automatic response has served us well.

Now for todays exercise on how to hypnotize people. We are going to do the opposite of rapport. We are going to purposefully not get into rapport with someone.

Instead of matching and mirroring, or pacing and leading, I want you to do the opposite.

First find a victim. Then breathe at a different rate. Talk to them in a different speed than they use. If they stand with their arms to the side, cross yours. Do the opposite of whatever they do while you are talking to them.

Notice how uncomfortable they get. They will try to get away from you. Notice how powerful this is from both the stand point of having rapport and purposefully avoiding it. Go into a store and accost a salesperson with this. Notice how you feel about the other person.

Today we are going to have a very simple exercise. You are going to learn how to hypnotize people covertly. What I mean by covertly, is they won’t know you have hypnotized them.

That’s right, they will never be the wiser. Are they going to go through their past lives, give you all their money, quit smoking hash, or lose 300 pounds? No. They will however do things you communicate with their subconscious.

Before I reveal the greatest secrets of how to hypnotize people without them knowing, I want to again cover the two main definitions of hypnosis.

1. An altered state of mind

2. Directly communicating with the subconscious

Ladies and gentlemen this is not mind control. It is hard core influence done purposefully. This is completely natural, you do it everyday, and you see everyone around you do it everyday, until now, you might not have noticed it or gave it a name.

The name is rapport.

Watch two friends talking at a bar or at work. Notice their positions relative to each other. Are they using similar gestures? Is the posture similar? Are their expressions complimentary? Do they use the same tone, inflection, volume, and cadence while they talk? If one of them shifts their weight, does the other soon follow?

This is rapport. Only 5%-10% of our communication is the words we say. Most of it is non-verbal. When we communicate with someone we do this naturally. It lets the other persons subconscious know we are interested and engaged.

Now, how to hypnotize people covertly.

Pick someone at work, your spouse, or one of you children. Watch them for a moment. First watch how they breathe. Do the breath from their stomach or chest? Watch the speed and how deep they breathe. Now start breathing the same way they do. Breathe at the same rate, with the same depth, and from the same location. You don’t have to stare at their chests, watch their shoulders.

Now start talking to them. Talk at the same rate they breathe. If their arms are crossed cross yours. If their legs are crossed cross yours the same way. Be a mirror to them. If they are smiling, smile. Talk at the same tone as them, same volume, and same cadence. You don’t have to be perfect. If they grab their left elbow, grasp your right wrist.

Remember you are being a mirror. Gesture with the intensity with similar movements as them. Don’t worry, you won’t get caught.

This process is called pacing and leading.

After you have paced them for a few minutes, start to lead. Touch the side of your face. Watch them do the same thing. Now pace them a little more then lead. Start to slowly increase your breathing, in depth and speed. Watch them do the same.

Shift your weight to one side, watch them do the same.

Here is the secret formula to learn how to hypnotize people covertly. Pace, Pace, pace, lead. Pace, pace lead. Pace, pace lead.

By pacing the other person, you will instantly connect with them on a subconscious level. You are communicating with them on a subconscious level. If you sufficiently pace, they will follow when you lead.

Congratulations, you have learned how to to hypnotize people without their conscious consent.

Keep practicing.

Enough background. You want to know how to hypnotize a person. It is high time to throw theory to the wind and get your feet wet. Hold on and enjoy the ride.

It is now time to hypnotize a person. This person will be your best subject throughout your training. This must be a person that you know completely. You must know there ins and outs, their likes and dislikes, their wants and needs, and most importantly their fears and their strengths.

What we are going to do during our first trance with them is boost your self confidence and at the same time make them feel better for having been your guinea pig. The person you are going to hypnotize today is yourself.

Please remember, all hypnosis is self hypnosis. Your goal in this trance is to make yourself feel more relaxed. Now obviously, I am not there to guide you through this, and this is written, so, you will have to remember the steps or write them down on an index card. Either is fine. Light trance is still a trance. The more you hypnotize someone the better they will get at going into a deeper and deeper trance.

It is important that you know what a trance feels like, so when you are guiding someone there, you know the direction. Now, let’s get started.

First sit in a comfortable position with your feet on the floor and hands in a comfortable position on the arms of the chair or your lap.

Next I want you to take five very deep breaths, in through your nose, filling your lungs to their peak capacity. Hold the breath for a few seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth.

As you exhale the first breath I want you to imagine all the stress from your head is being released. Imagine when you inhale your head is being filled with a solution that absorbs stress. The first breath in absorbs all the stress in your head face and neck. As you exhale that stress is released, slowly leaving your body through your mouth. As the stress leaves it leaves that part of your body completely relaxed.

Your second breath absorbs all the stress from your arms and upper body. All the stress leaves as you exhale, leaving you more relaxed.

Your third breath absorbs the lower abdomen. Completely relaxing it as you exhale.

Fourth breath, your pelvis to your knees. Just ignore the world around you while you focus on absorbing the stress, and completely releasing all tension as you exhale.

Your fifth breath, takes all the stress from your knees to the bottom of your feet and completely absorbs it. As you exhale, you feel any remnants of stress leave through the bottoms of your feet as you exhale.

You can now breath slightly deeper than usual at a relaxed rate. Knowing at any time you may wish to take a deeper breath to relax even more than you already are.

Once all of your stress is gone I would like you to picture yourself in a well lit grey room. You see an extremely comfortable overstuffed grey chair in the middle of the room. Have a seat in the chair and take a very deep breath exhaling slowly, knowing with this breath it is possible to relax twice as much as you already are.

Now, enjoy the complete relaxation that you feel. Imagine a ring on your thumb. Turn the ring on your thumb around with your other hand while you enjoy this completely relaxed state.

Take another very deep breath relaxing twice as much as you exhale. Twirl the imaginary thumb ring again as you enjoy this state.

Now slowly open your eyes and become of aware of the room you are in.

Feel better? Congratulations you just hypnotized yourself. You now know how to hypnotize a person.

Before we learn how to hypnotize people, we need to dispel some of the myths surrounding hypnosis.

1. Learning how to hypnotize people is evil. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is little more than meditation which all religions encourage. There is nothing inherently bad about communicating directly with the subconscious mind.

2. People in hypnosis might never wake up. This is false. Unless you have become extremely skilled, and your subject is extremely skilled at going into trance, people remain in control. They are aware of their surroundings but choose not to react to them unless their subconscious tells them they are in danger.

3. You can control someone completely under hypnosis. Sorry, this is not going to happen. You will not be able to get someone to do anything against their morals whether under hypnosis or not. You will not get a stranger to give you all there worldly possessions. This requires brainwashing not hypnosis.

4. I will be able to hypnotize people against their will. Sorry, you will never hypnotize someone who does not want to be hypnotized. In order for it to work, you must have their permission or their subconscious will not listen to you.

5. Learning how to hypnotize people takes years of study and college to be able to do. You have been hypnotizing people your entire life. Once you learn how, it just takes a little practice. However, the more you learn about it and practice it, the better you will be at it.

6. Hypnotizing someone else is completely different from hypnotizing yourself. First of all, ALL hypnosis is self hypnosis. You will never hypnotize anyone; they will hypnotize themselves by following your directions. This is what makes it so safe. Your clients must make the decision to follow your suggestion in their own mind. This makes it their change not yours and gives it its power.

7. You have to be extremely careful not to go into trance while you are hypnotizing someone. It is almost impossible to hypnotize someone without going into a trance yourself. The best way to put someone into a trance is to show them where it is and explain how to get there. However you will be giving suggestions based on their needs and how they think. You may not want those changes for yourself, then again, you may want the choice for yourself.

8. Hypnosis gives you only one way to act under certain circumstances. The purpose of hypnosis is not to carry out commands given in trance. This will not work. Hypnosis is about giving someone a choice in how to react. Choice is empowering.

9. Hypnosis is only successful under very deep trance. While it may be slightly more effective under deep trance, most change can happen while mildly relaxed.

10. If I go into trance, someone can tell me to do stupid things, and I won’t remember doing it. When you are in a trance you remain fully alert and remember everything that happens. Again the primary purpose of your subconscious mind is to protect you from harm.

Before we learn how to hypnotize people, we still need a little more background. Hypnosis is a natural state that we all spend some time in.  The key is recognizing it when we or someone else is in a trance.

You have been going in and out of trance all of your life. What’s more, you have been putting people in trance just as long.

Have you ever driven somewhere and suddenly realized you don’t remember driving. Your conscious mind wandered into other things and your subconscious mind took over driving for you. Don’t be alarmed, if there would have been a problem that required a conscious thought, your subconscious would have alarmed you, and you would have “snapped out of it.”

In fact the language of hypnosis is in many of our daily common phrases. Consider these;

“Snap out of it”

You walk into a room through the “EN-Trance”

“I zoned out”

“I was entranced by the movie”

“Be mindful of…” Meaning use your conscious mind

Trance is the structure of comedy. When someone tells a joke your mind follows the story to make sense of it. The punch line doesn’t follow your normal logic pattern; your mind quickly snaps out of it and understands it is the logic gap that makes it funny.

Have you ever laughed at a joke? Has someone else laughed at a joke that you told? If so, you have both been hypnotized and hypnotized someone else. And you thought you had to learn how to hypnotize people. You are already an expert. Now you just have to develop the ability and use it for you want.

Let’s dispel a common major myth behind hypnosis.

“If you learn how to hypnotize people, they will be completely in your control and will do things they wouldn’t normally do.”

Here is the fact. People won’t do anything against their values under hypnosis.

But what about the stage hypnotist that gets people to cluck like a chicken? Are these people really hypnotized, or is it completely staged?

Yes they are really hypnotized, but if you have seen one of these shows, you know the hypnotist takes volunteers. These are people not afraid to get up on stage and act the fool. So, while clucking like a chicken is not something they would normally do, being the clown and acting out in a crowd is not against their internal values.

You could not hypnotize someone into either being an atheist or suddenly believing in God. In fact all that would happen is they would come out of trance because your subconscious when send a danger warning. That is its job. It carries out mundane tasks and protects you.

In order to learn how to hypnotize people, you must understand its limits.

Before we learn how to hypnotize people, let’s spend some time on what exactly is hypnosis.

The first question I’ll pose is have you ever been hypnotized? Most people will say no. The truth is we have all been hypnotized, and most of us are under hypnosis part of every day.

Hypnosis is loosely defined as an altered state of consciousness. Have you ever day dreamed? Have you ever been so “deep in thought” you ignore everything around you? Have you ever watched TV or a movie and obliterated the outside world? These are all examples of altered states of consciousness, or hypnosis if you will.

If you wish to learn how to hypnotize people, you must first understand it. Hypnosis is probably better defined as directly communicating with the subconscious mind. Your mind has two parts, your conscious mind and you subconscious mind.

Your conscious mind is what you think about. What you control. For instance it decides you want to read this article. Then your subconscious mind takes over. It tells your eyes to look at the first word, it converts what your eye sees into a picture in your mind so your conscious mind can understand it.

Your subconscious mind is where all the action is. It does the billions of mundane tasks for your conscious mind and your body. Here is another example. You can decide to now breath in through your nose and out through your mouth taking a deep long breath relaxing while you exhale, and continuing this while you’re on this site.

This task is accomplished by your conscious mind. In five minutes you will not however just quit breathing because your subconscious mind has put it on auto pilot.

If you want to walk into the kitchen and get a drink, you can. (Conscious mind) But your conscious mind does not have to tell every muscle when to move and in what order. You learned this as a baby, and your subconscious has been in charge of it ever since.

Without your subconscious mind you would never get anything done. Every little task would be a huge effort. The trick is to communicate effectively with the subconscious mind with the conscious minds approval and blessing. Then you learn. It becomes automatic.

If we can learn how someone’s subconscious has been hypnotized or trained in the past, we learn how to hypnotize people.

A little on what hypnosis is not.

It is not mind control. It can be very powerful, but it is not going to make someone do something they wouldn’t ordinarily do. You cannot hypnotize someone and tell them to kill a perfect stranger. It will never work unless they are a psychopath to begin with.

Don’t believe that when you learn how to hypnotize people, they will become a zombie and do your evil bidding (BaHaHaHa). Hypnosis is a tool of influence. It will help people “talk” themselves into something they believe won’t hurt them.

If you want to learn how to hypnotize people, we must start with a sound a foundation and build from there.
